Two of the greatest equine events on earth, and both are right on our doorstep this June

Guards Polo June

If you live in or around Virginia Water, you will know that June has a habit of delivering some truly special days out. The countryside looks its finest, the social calendar fills up quickly, and for those of us lucky enough to call this corner of Surrey home, two of the most prestigious equestrian events in the world land within days of one another.

We are talking, of course, about the Cartier Queen’s Cup Final at Guards Polo Club and Royal Ascot. One is the pinnacle of the polo world. The other needs no introduction whatsoever. Together, they make mid-June one of the most exciting fortnights of the entire year in this part of the world.

The Cartier Queen’s Cup Final, Sunday 14th June at Guards Polo Club

Just a few minutes from Virginia Water, nestled within the magnificent grounds of Windsor Great Park, Guards Polo Club is situated on the historic Smiths Lawn and is the largest polo club in Europe, with 10 pitches spread across 130 acres. It hosts what many consider the jewel in the crown of the English polo season. The Cartier Queen’s Cup is one of the top five polo tournaments in the world, and 2026 marks Cartier’s 14th year as the event’s headline sponsor, a partnership that has become as synonymous with early summer as Pimm’s and sunshine.

This year, nineteen top-flight teams have been competing since 19th May, with the Semi-Finals taking place on Wednesday 10th June and the Grand Final on Sunday 14th June. The Final is, by any measure, one of the great days of the English sporting and social season. International players, superb horsemanship, extraordinary ponies, impeccable hospitality and, more often than not, members of the Royal Family making an appearance in the stands.

For residents of Virginia Water and the Wentworth Estate, this is quite literally on the doorstep. Guards Polo Club is the sort of venue that reminds you exactly why people fall in love with living in this part of Surrey. Whether you are in the Clubhouse enjoying the full hospitality experience or simply watching from the grandstand with a glass of something cold, Finals Day is a genuinely special occasion.

Royal Ascot, Tuesday 16th to Saturday 20th June at Ascot Racecourse

Just days later, the world’s attention turns to Ascot Racecourse, a mere ten-minute drive from Virginia Water, for five days of world-class flat racing, unrivalled pageantry and everything that makes British summer quite unlike anywhere else on earth.

Royal Ascot 2026 runs from Tuesday 16th June to Saturday 20th June, with 35 races across the five days, all broadcast live and free-to-air on ITV Racing. Each day opens with the Royal Procession at 2pm, when His Majesty the King and members of the Royal Family travel the famous Straight Mile by horse-drawn carriage before the first race at 2:30pm. It is a tradition dating back to 1825 that never loses its charm.

The meeting features nine of Britain’s 32 annual Group 1 races, drawing the finest racehorses and jockeys from across the globe and attracting over 300,000 visitors across the week. It is Europe’s best-attended race meeting and one of Britain’s most valuable sporting occasions. Tuesday opens with the Queen Anne Stakes and King Charles III Stakes. Thursday brings Ladies’ Day. Saturday brings the curtain down with a flourish.

For those attending in person, the choice of enclosure sets the tone entirely. The Royal Enclosure is open exclusively to Members and their guests. The Queen Anne Enclosure offers premier public access, with views of the Parade Ring and the famous post-race Bandstand singing that has become a beloved tradition in its own right. And for those preferring something a little more relaxed, the Village Enclosure welcomes picnics and a more informal atmosphere.

For many of our clients and neighbours, Royal Ascot is simply part of the annual rhythm of life here, as natural and anticipated as the bluebells in spring.

What these events mean for the area and for property

It is no accident that some of the most sought-after addresses in the country sit within a short drive of both Guards Polo Club and Ascot Racecourse. Residents of Virginia Water and the Wentworth Estate are not simply close to great events. They are genuinely part of the world that surrounds them.

When buyers come to us looking for a home in this area, the lifestyle is always part of the conversation. Access to open parkland, world-class sporting occasions, excellent schools and swift connections into London are all part of what makes Virginia Water such an enduringly desirable place to live.

June, more than perhaps any other month, puts that lifestyle on full display.

Thinking of moving to the area? Come and see what it’s all about this June

If you have been considering a move to this part of Surrey and have not yet spent time here during the summer, we honestly cannot think of a better advertisement for the area than mid-June. Come and watch the polo. Head to Ascot for a day. Walk through Windsor Great Park on a warm evening. Have lunch in the village. Drive around the Wentworth Estate.

It is one thing to be shown around a beautiful property. It is quite another to feel the energy of the place you are thinking of calling home. This time of year does that better than any brochure ever could. The area simply comes alive, and for those of us who live and work here, it serves as a wonderful reminder of just how fortunate we are.

If you are at any stage of thinking about a move, whether that is a firm plan or simply an early conversation, we would love to show you around. Come for the polo. Come for the racing. And while you are here, let us show you what is available.

And then there’s September…

We would be doing you a disservice if we talked about the summer season here without going beyond horses. Because just when you think the equestrian calendar has given you everything it has to offer, September brings something completely different to the doorstep and no less spectacular for it. Wentworth Club hosts the BMW PGA Championship, and the whole area gets another extraordinary lift.

The 2026 BMW PGA Championship runs from 15th to 20th September, with tournament days from Thursday 17th through to Sunday 20th. It is the flagship event of the DP World Tour, held right here on the West Course at Wentworth, and it draws some of the finest golfers in the world to our doorstep. In 2025 it sold out on four out of five days, and 2026 is expected to be no different.

For those who live on or around the Wentworth Estate, Championship week is something else entirely. You wake up to the sound of helicopters and commentary drifting across the course. The village is a hive of activity. The atmosphere is electric in the very best way. There is a celebrity Pro-Am, live music, a Festival of Golf village, and the genuine drama of elite sport unfolding on a course that many of our residents can see from their own gardens.

People often ask us what summer is like here. The honest answer is that it is rather wonderful, from the first polo chukka in May right through to the last putt in September. There really is nowhere quite like it.

Thinking of moving to Virginia Water or the Wentworth Estate?

If the prospect of watching the Queen’s Cup Final on a Sunday afternoon, heading to Royal Ascot a few days later, and then watching the world’s best golfers play past your front gate in September sounds rather appealing, and we can only imagine it does, then perhaps it is time to have a conversation about making this area your home.

At Barton Wyatt, we have been part of the Virginia Water and Wentworth community since 1965. We know the roads, the properties, the lifestyle and the people. Whether you are looking to buy, sell or let, our team is ready to help.
